A celebration of heritage and empathy: Samara O'Gorman’s visit to Edward Murphy
On January 22, Edward Murphy Elementary School welcomed Samara O’Gorman for her second stop on the Jackie Fisher Empathy Tour. This year marks O’Gorman’s third year presenting “Leading with your heart,” a presentation that focuses on anti-bullying, empathy, self-love, and the importance of healthy friendships. She encourages students to connect with their individuality and passions, empowering them to become leaders in their own unique ways.
“I felt an instant sense of belonging at Edward Murphy, and after learning more about the school’s namesake, I understand why,” said O’Gorman. The school is named after Canadian politician Edward Murphy, who was born in Ireland. Ironically, a portion of O’Gorman’s presentation revolves around her role as Queen in the St. Patrick’s Day Parades in and around Montreal. Murphy was a past president of the St. Patrick’s Society, which started the Montreal parade in 1824. He was also a steadfast supporter of Irish culture and language, both of which O’Gorman advocates for in her daily life.
We believe the late politician would be proud of the work that O’Gorman is doing in schools. “Now knowing the history of this school, I would love to return and treat the kids to an afternoon of Irish traditional music and stories someday!” shared O’Gorman.
What makes this coincidence even more special is that O’Gorman decided on a whim to read a new poem to the students titled Where the Green Land Holds Weight. She wrote it last summer while on holiday in Prince Edward Island, inspired by the Canadian landscape and her Irish heritage. The students celebrated the poem; you could hear a pin drop while she recited it. At the end of her visit, O’Gorman donated a copy of her latest poetry collection, July’s Return to the school’s library.
Mary Poullas, the personal development & community animator at Edward Murphy, shared her thoughts with on us the visit: “Samara’s reading was powerful and engaging, and her words truly resonated with our audience. Many students were inspired by her honesty, creativity, and the way she brought poetry to life. We are incredibly grateful for the time and energy she dedicated to our school. It was a meaningful experience, and we hope to welcome her back again in the future.”
